Tendons are the fibres that make this connection.
\n
Ligaments
\n
The main function of our ligaments is to connect bone to bone at the joints, which helps with stabilization of the joints and of the body. You can gradually train their ligaments to stretch and become more flexible, such as when a gymnast learns to do the splits, but overexertion can lead to serious injury. You will have heard the term ‘double jointed’. Individuals who are said to be ‘double jointed’ actually just have extremely flexible ligaments.
\n
Difference in injuries
\n
Ligament Injuries
\n
\n
\n
Causes
\n
Strains or sudden forces, causing them to rupture, can cause injury to your ligament. Stretching ligament past a certain point can also cause an irreversible change to the structure.
\n
\n
\n
Symptoms
\n
When you damage ligaments, you will experience some degree of pain at the affected area. The amount of pain depends on the severity of the injury. There will be inflammation around the area. A ligament that is prone to injury is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that resides within the knee. Many athletes injure this ligament during vigorous activity. With this injury, their leg may ‘give-way’, along with pain and inflammation.
\n
\n
\n
Treatments
\n
Knowing the difference between ligament and tendon is important to determine what treatment is needed. If you suspect that you may have injured your ligament, then it would be most advisable to pay a visit to a physiotherapist to assess what has occurred and attain proper treatment. In most cases, injuries such as these can be effectively treated with the use of supports and braces. In more serious cases, surgery may be required to correct the problem. Deep tissue massage therapy around the area of the ligament damage is very effective at facilitating repair and recovery.
\n
\n
\n
Tendon Injuries
\n
\n
\n
Causes
\n
Much like ligaments, excessive force or pressure can cause injury to tendons. A tendon prone to injury is the Achilles tendon which connects the heel to the lower leg muscle. Injury to this tendon can be caused by over-straining or the use of improper footwear during exercise or vigorous activity.
\n
\n
\n
Symptoms
\n
As with injuries to ligaments, an injury to the tendon can cause pain and inflammation, as well as stiffness. The extent of the symptoms depends greatly on the severity of the injury. If a ligament is slightly torn, you may experience slight pain and inflammation and the injury should soon heal. If the tendon was to completely snap, then the pain experienced would be far more severe, leading to impaired movements and possibly permanent damage.
\n
\n
\n
Treatments
\n
If you believe you have injured your tendon, the best action is applying ice to the affected area to help reduce inflammation. The use of a brace or support would also be advisable to provide extra support to the injured tendon. To minimise injuries to an Achilles tendon, ensure proper footwear when exercising or performing vigorous activity. A health care professional will help you ascertain exactly what has been injured and what treatment would be most advisable via the use of an X-ray or MRI.
\n
\n
\n
Conclusion
\n
Due to the similarity between ligaments and tendons, it can be extremely difficult to differentiate between an injury to a ligament and to a tendon. In many cases, a MRI will be conducted to establish whether you have injured your ligament or your tendon. Seeing a Physiotherapist/ Massage Therapist as soon as you suspect an injury is important to prevent any further damage.
"},{"url":"/posts/gym-under-new-ownership/","relativePath":"posts/gym-under-new-ownership.md","relativeDir":"posts","frontmatter":{"title":"Gym under new ownership ","subtitle":"Everlast Fitness Club. Pushing our bodies physically and mentally. However, so often recovery is overlooked and never mentioned.
\n
It is equally as important to give back to our bodies, this is where a professional and skilfully applied massage can transform your recovery, facilitating you to cycle well on a regular and consistent basis.
\n
I was reading a piece only last week in The Times (30/08/2019) about the retirement of German road cyclist and ace sprinter Marcel Kittel. He terminated his cycling contract citing fatigue and a loss in the quality of his life. This is obviously an extreme example at the top level of the sport, but it happens to the best in the world.
\n
It is not my intention to get too technical into the Sport Science, and if I’m being truthful that is not my area of expertise. My aim is to enlighten you on the benefits of massage.
\n
When you cycle, working hard on those hills, the waste product lactic acid builds up in the muscles, (that burn after a hill climb) our bodies naturally eliminate a certain amount of it. But over time it will accumulate and cause fatigue, which in turn can cause injuries. Massage helps eliminate lactic acid and accelerates recovery, reduces injury. Injuries hamper our progress and stall our momentum…frustration!
\n
When we train and exercise our nervous systems are also affected and need time to recover. Massage can also benefit this due to its calming influence. As a general rule it can take a few days for our nervous systems to recover after a hard ride. This is why it is difficult to back up a hard training session with another the next day.
\n
You should view getting a massage as an important part of your health and well-being. Your body is an amazing machine and it needs to be maintained and looked after. Lifestyle choices about what you eat and drink are important; we all know that, it’s drummed into us. Getting a professional deep tissue massage is less well known.
\n
The general populous mentality is a “no pain, no problem” outlook and that is fine. The best way to enjoy massage is as a maintenance tool. I could argue there is some ignorance around massage and its benefits, therefore a fear of the unknown, a seedy side to it. Never worry, you won’t get that at my massage practice. However, what does that mean? It means different things to different people, but to me it means overall holistic health, to put it another way taking personal responsibility for our health through our day to day (hour to hour even) lifestyle choices. Now, I'm not meaning living like a monk! And after all I'm far from perfect myself so I don't expect that. Going to the gym is great, going for a run is great, going for a walk, great, a swim, great, these are all positive (or great) lifestyle choices. But I am a big advocate of listening to your body. A major one is rest, which panics some. However the main one is giving back to our bodies. This is where I really feel like I come into my own with my expertise as a Massage Therapist. If you are reading this and thinking about giving back to you and your body I can personally assure you it will be a wise decision.
\n
This might surprise you. But this isn’t to say that scar tissue cannot form without a trauma. Sitting at a desk for hours, weeks, years, can have a similar long term effect on the muscles.
\n
When the body so cleverly ‘heals’ itself, it lays down a less elastic, second grade, poorly vascularised form of tissue called collagen fibres to repair the muscle.
\n
When this occurs the newly repaired area can often form and migrate into some of the surrounding undamaged fibres as it knits itself together, forming adhesions or ‘knots’ in the muscles.
\n
When you stretch and get the feeling of a fairly specific pain in the muscle, that is probably one of these knots. For a muscle to function properly, the muscle fibres need to be able to glide along each other as they stretch and contract.
\n
If they are all stuck together the fibres cannot glide and the muscle cannot work as effectively as it should.
\n
Scar tissue, if allowed to build up, can cause significant restriction in the performance of a muscle as it has a less elastic quality.
\n
By breaking down scar tissue and adhesions through Sports Massage we can restore function to the muscle and relieve the subsequent pain.
"},{"url":"/posts/my-3-tips-for-general-mental-and-physical-well-being/","relativePath":"posts/my-3-tips-for-general-mental-and-physical-well-being.md","relativeDir":"posts","frontmatter":{"title":"My 3 tips for general mental and physical well being ","date":"2020-05-19T14:09:42.404Z","template":"post"},"html":"
There is plenty of literature available with titles like “How to keep your mind Healthy during lockdown.’
\n
Lots of health professionals conducting ‘Zoom’ conference style calls reaching out to people. These are all fantastic resources, I’m sure you will agree (no, there is no but)!
\n
I want to write this honestly and share the techniques both mental and physical I try my best to conduct on a daily basis.
\n
My first tip and an important one for me is my Hydration. Very soon after waking I’d be getting the water in. My wife dubs me an ‘aqualholic’ and to be fair, she is probably right. It is something that is important to me. Usually I aim for about 3 to 4 litres daily, but if I don’t hit that amount I’m fine with that.
\n
My second tip is to stretch, specifically static stretching. I’m quite addicted to it. For me, it is energising . I have a yoga routine I loosely follow meaning I have standard yoga moves and positions that work best for me.
\n
I have been inspired by Wim Hof or the 'Ice man'. One of his mantras is breathing. Big deep diaphragmatic breaths using your entire lung capacity. It all makes sense to me. A second trend of Hof's are cold showers, they take a bit of courage but well worth it and very invigorating.
\n
My third tip is I try and eat well. Easy to write those words than to do it sometimes. We as a family 99% of the time prepare and cook meals from scratch. There is no doubt it can be time consuming and tough sometimes. But, it is time well spent in my opinion. Each week we sit down and plan our meals for the week ahead. This requires organisation and a pinch of discipline. Thankfully these two qualities come reasonably naturally to me.
\n
Nothing outlined above is rocket science. These are the techniques that work well for me. Relieve stress and anxiety
\n
In today’s world, there seem to be more stressors than ever before. Taking time out from your busy schedule to come get a massage can greatly reduce the amount of stress you are feeling.
\n
2. Relieve lower back pain
\n
Lower back pain is a common complaint among many people, especially as they age. When severe enough, this kind of pain can lead to missed work or disability. Massage therapy can be effective in decreasing pain in your lower back, and in decreasing the disability associated with it.
\n
3. Reduce pain in other areas of the body
\n
While lower back pain is very common, pain in other areas can also be treated with Richard's Massage Therapy. Common areas where clients seek relief from pain are the neck, the shoulders, knee and hip joints, and other areas of the body. There are many causes for pain, and I am trained and experienced to help you manage and deal with pain caused by a range of conditions including arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, myalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and headaches etc.
\n
4. Reduce muscle tension
\n
From the highest paid professional athletes to those of us who follow more simple workout programs, people who exercise can benefit from massage. Massage, particularly a Sports Massage, can help with conditioning, range of motion, and flexibility, as well as speed up recovery from muscle injuries.
\n
5. Improve flexibility
\n
For athletes and non-athletes alike, massage can improve the range of motion and flexibility of your muscles. Massage stimulates blood circulation around your muscles, which increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, leading to increased flexibility, among other benefits.
\n
Thank you for checking out this blog. Posture is an area I do address when new (or existing) clients see me. What is posture? What is a bad posture? What is a good posture? These questions require considerable thought in order to get an answer. I don't propose going into it here as it is such an in-depth topic. There can be a number of factors that cause this build up. Probably the most common would be desk working, sitting for prolonged periods at a computer. This has potential for headaches to develop.
\n
Another common 'modern' cause of tension is looking down at our phones. I regularly tell my clients that stress isn’t viral; you don’t catch it, like you do the flu. For some, it sneaks up on them, building over time and it can make you sick! Be sure to get the owners consent first! One foot at a time. The emphasis is on moving deliberately, nice and slowly. Feel the tender spots and stop on them for a while you go 'ouch! that's sore' That sore is ok, it's tension and pressure leaving the body.
\n
The theory is by releasing the tendons and muscles in your feet this helps release tension out of your calf muscles. I will touch on two benefits. Firstly, for stress management. Everyone has times of stress in their lives and often this can manifest in people's muscles, the tight back neck and shoulders, the stiff neck. I see and deal with this a lot. A client would simply say to me \"_I am feeling so tense in my neck and shoulders!\" _I see great results from my massages with almost always positive feedback post session. I generally recommend a 4 weekly (about once a month) massage as a way of maintenance.
\n
Secondly, to boost immunity: Deep tissue massage, deep effleurage strokes get the blood flowing into our muscles and also stimulates our lymphatic system. This circulatory system carries out immune responses in our body. It keeps us healthy by fighting any infections that enter our body. This is crucial at any time of the year but none more so than in the winter.
\n
There are of course many benefits of attending a professional Massage Therapist. If you are a first timer and thinking seriously about doing it, you won't regret making this good decision. It would be my pleasure to help you on your journey of optimal health and taking responsibility for an area of your health.
\n
Your best in holistic health.
\n
Richard.
"},{"url":"/posts/my-clinic-is-open-to-all-not-just-members-of-the-dw-gym-at-shaws-bridge/","relativePath":"posts/my-clinic-is-open-to-all-not-just-members-of-the-dw-gym-at-shaws-bridge.md","relativeDir":"posts","frontmatter":{"title":"My clinic is open to all, not just members of the DW Gym at Shaws Bridge","date":"2019-11-28T19:56:43.709Z","template":"post"},"html":"
If you are looking into booking some quality, professional Massage Therapy with me please remember there is no requirement to be a member of the DW Gym. Originally I had entered for May 2021 and was training well for it at the time, but then the world changed, and that put paid to that, and like most lost my mojo. But I've got it back. So between parenting and massaging full-time, I'm trying my best to fit in some training.
\n
So, in the fear of sounding negative, I have little or no expectations for it! This way there is minimal pressure. Originally I'd said I'd love to run it all i.e no walking. But now I'm not going to put that pressure on myself as I've left it too late to prepare properly, but that is fine too.
\n
What I can control is my physical and mental preparation.
